2020-2022 Lakeshore CAP
Community Needs Assessment
This assessment covers the counties of Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc and Sheboygan. The qualities assessed are the conditions affecting the low-income population in the four-county area. The information used in the report is gleaned from surveys of low income participants including the elderly, pregnant adolescents, minority populations, the homeless, and single parent households. The details of the data collection address the requirements of the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) statutes and provide an opportunity for both the impoverished and civic leaders to participate. It can be found here and also on our Who We Are web page. Click either link below to read, download or print the statistics, comments and conclusions:
The survey was distributed throughout the months of June and July 2019. Surveys were made available at Lakeshore CAP’s facilities for completion during intake, online and through agencies such as Catholic Charities, WIC program offices, local health departments, food pantries, domestic violence agencies, homeless shelters, mental health support services and other partner locations throughout the four counties. Low income survey respondents totaled 202 and stakeholder respondents totaled 112.

NATIONAL PARENTS AS TEACHERS DAY!
Take some time to teach your children something new!
Use #ParentsAsTeachersDay to post on social media!
National Parents as Teachers (PAT) Day is being observed on November 11, 2019. On this day, the Parents as Teachers Organization offers educational services to parents across the country. Every day, the PAT affiliates give parents of young children support and provide information so all children learn, grow and develop to realize their full potential.
Parents as Teachers is celebrating 35 years of building strong communities, thriving families and children that are healthy, safe and ready to learn. The concept for Parents as Teachers developed in the 1970’s when Missouri educators noted that children were beginning kindergarten with varying levels of school readiness. Research showed that greater parent involvement is a critical link in the child’s development of learning skills, including reading and writing.
LAKESHORE CAP “PARENTS AS TEACHERS PROGRAM”
Lakeshore CAP offers family-focused services to expectant mothers/parents and families with new babies in Manitowoc County. Children who have nurturing, healthy and supportive experiences in their early years are much better prepared to succeed in school and life. Parent Educators work around your schedule and address issues such as:
- Maternal and child health

- Positive parenting practices
- Safe home environments
- Discipline
- Community resources
- Access to services
Weekly home visits provide individuals and families with educational information and parent-child activities to support parents as their child’s first and most important teacher! As part of the program, monthly group activities give families a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents with children of similar ages. Following a community partner referral or a self-referral, a Parent Educator will contact you to determine if you are eligible and if the program is a good fit for your family.
Please see our web page at https://lakeshorecap.org/pat-home-visiting/ where you’ll find a calendar of Manitowoc area events, simple activities for children and a listing of our Parent Café dates — or call 920-682-3737 to be put in touch with a Parent Educator for more information.
