APRIL IS SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH (SAAM)
SAAM is a campaign to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent it. “I Ask” is the campaign theme. It champions the message that asking for consent is a healthy, normal, and necessary part of everyday interactions. Each year during the month of April, state, territory, tribal and community-based organizations, rape crisis centers, government agencies, businesses, campuses and individuals plan events and activities. These events are meant to highlight sexual violence as a public health, human rights and social justice issue — and, likewise, reinforce the need for prevention efforts.
Denim Day
The SAAM Day of Action provides a day to focus awareness on sexual violence prevention. It is nationally recognized in the United States and observed annually as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The focus is most recognized as Denim Day, a movement born of tragedy:
In 1998, an Italian court ruled that a woman could not have been raped because her jeans were “very, very tight.” Consequently. the court said the sex must have been consensual as she would have needed to aid in their removal. The ruling outraged women in Italy and worldwide. As a result, it sparked a movement “In her Jeans,” whereby the denim pants became a symbol for victims and advocates.

It is designed to assist professionals who work with families and children to promote the optimal development of all children while protecting vulnerable children from harm.
Six 2-hour modules make up the training, sharing ways to help practitioners, community members and parents better understand and address family needs using a strengths-based lens.
Know The Five Protective Factors!
- Parent Resilience: The ability to recover from difficult life experiences and often to be strengthened by and even transformed by those experiences
- Social Emotional Competence of Children: Family and child interactions that help children develop the ability to communicate clearly, recognize and regulate their emotions, and establish and maintain relationships
- Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development: Understanding child development and parenting strategies that support physical, cognitive, language and social emotional development
- Social Connections: Positive relationships that provide emotional, informational, instrumental and spiritual support
- Concrete Support in Times of Need: Access to concrete support and services that address a family’s needs and help minimize stress caused by challenges
Participants will leave with:

About In Courage
The Manitowoc County Domestic Violence Center (D.B.A In Courage) is a non-profit organization providing supportive responses to people in the Manitowoc County area who are experiencing violence in their lives. Abuse is neither justified nor acceptable under any circumstances.
Abuse can take on many forms including: Physical, Verbal, Sexual and Emotional. Abuse is not simply physical harm. It is any pattern of controlling behavior. For many survivors, abuse can have a long lasting effect that can be damaging and devastating if left untreated. Realizing that domestic violence has been a way of life for many families for a long time, we seek to break the cycle of family destruction. For that reason, we dedicated our agency to the belief that ”No one deserves to be abused.”
In Courage Crisis Line, Shelter, Support
In support of our belief, we offer a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week crisis line (920-684-5770), a shelter home for women and their children; supportive counseling services; support groups; financial, legal, and medical advocacy; community education programs; child care; emergency transportation; follow-up services.
One of our most important services is to provide support in a warm, friendly, non-judgmental atmosphere. Each person has the right to decide their next step. Therefore, we provide information and options for people to make their own decisions.
