Lakeshore CAP is Celebrating Our Mission in May ♥“Community Action Month”♥
We are here to identify local needs and find solutions to issues that affect low-income persons. Thank you, Governor Evers for recognizing the work we do to improve the lives of our neighbors. See the State of Wisconsin Office of the Governor Proclamation at:
Wisconsin Community Action Month See a list below of Lakeshore Community Action Program’s current programming to assist eligible households in our Wisconsin service area of Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Door and Kewaunee counties.
The need for Community Action has never been greater. Neither has our resolve. We’re challenged to create solutions that don’t just help people stay afloat but build lives of stability, dignity, and, whenever possible, prosperity. And we will rise to that challenge. Community Action changes people’s lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live.
Whether our neighbors are experiencing a temporary set back or have been priced out
of affordable housing – too many struggle to achieve a good quality of life. Despite
America’s economic recovery, nearly 40 million of us are still living in poverty and even more are just one missed paycheck away from hardship. We believe everyone should be
able to take care of their families and have an equal opportunity at success. The nation’s Community Action network – including 1,000 plus Community Action Agencies – are
a robust, national, state, and local force, reaching children and families in 99% of America’s
counties with life changing services that create pathways to opportunity and prosperity.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
Mental Health Awareness Month provides a timely reminder that mental health is essential and that those living with mental health issues are deserving of care, understanding and compassion — and pathways to hope, healing, recovery and fulfillment.
A Story from JAK’s Place —
We’ve lost the battle. We’ve lost one of our own. Now what?
Jonah Andrew Klapatch ended his life in June of 2005 after a long battle with mental illness. He left friends and family and a community with so much grief and with so many unanswered questions. How did things get so bad?
Although it affects barely 1% of the population, schizophrenia is one of the most disabling diseases affecting humankind. Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe neurological brain disorder estimated in 2014 to affect 1.1 percent of the population or approximately 2.6 million adults in the United States aged 18 and older.
Symptoms of schizophrenia range from odd or strange to debilitating and life threatening. Jonah was “high functioning” in all respects but he still suffered. He was able to maintain employment and socialize like anyone else but he was also tormented, suffering from reoccurring delusions and feelings that didn’t make sense in reality. He believed something was living in his head. He thought that suicide was the only way out.
Suicide is the worst possible outcome of mental illness. When someone has lost the will to live altogether the illness has won. Family and friends are left heartbroken, asking for answers that don’t exist, blaming themselves and others. It’s a terrible thing all around. The difference with Jonah’s suicide was how our community responded. People came together, supported each other, lifted each other up and created something positive. JAK’s Place opened in September of 2006, it became a beacon in the community that created it.
At JAK’s —
We serve people who suffer from Mental Illness and also their friends and family. We have a wonderful facility, positive and capable staff, and a willingness to help people. We currently have 10 different support groups that meet regularly: everything from Art Group to Tai Chi. One of our newest accomplishments is housing a group specifically designed for teenagers. Our groups are led by our staff of highly qualified professionals who donate their time.
JAK’s Place Survives on Grants and Donations —
Fundraising and networking with other local agencies and organizations are a constant. We don’t charge for our groups or our weekly meal or to use our computers during regular hours. Everything we have in our building has been donated: furniture, art supplies, kitchen wares, everything. We continue to provide services and support to everyone who walks in our doors at no charge. Your contributions go to keep our doors open, our building safe and efficient, and our clients well served.
Donate items (like above) or donate funding (see below) — and call JAK’s Place (920-818-0525) to be entered into our Weekly Drawing!

Manitowoc Addiction Recovery
Providing a LIGHT OF HOPE through the darkness of addiction
The public is ready for a different story to go along with substance abuse and addiction. The focus is often put on the addiction side of the story; but there is another side of the story. It’s about recovery! Everyone is affected by addiction in some form or another so we’ve set out to address this situation.
Because treatment is not always available to those struggling with Substance Use Disorder, the Lighthouse Recovery Community Center provides a safe and social space to those seeking recovery from addiction. The center is using one of the most successful means to recovery — peer-to-peer support with a coach on staff to help members work on their recovery plan. Telling our story and sharing our experience, strength, and hope is how we learn to live and watch others do the same.

Embracing Pathways to Substance Abuse Recovery
We have established and continue to sustain a recovery community organization and center that embraces all pathways to addiction recovery. In addition, we support all individuals impacted by the disease through education, coaching, programming, referrals and advocacy. The Center is dedicated to helping people struggling with addiction — and their families — to regain their lives and thrive again.
